Last Updated on Friday, 03 February 2012 22:46 Written by Marie Friday, 03 February 2012 22:41

On February 8, Colorado State University will host a job fair for students and alumni from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Lory Student Center main ballroom. The Fort Collins Ram Network, part of the CSU Alumni Association, held a preparation session for alumni Monday night. If you couldn’t join us, here are a few common mistakes to avoid as you prepare for and experience the job fair:

Lacking focus –companies are going to expect that you know how you plug in to the organization. “I’ll do anything” is not a great sales pitch to a hiring manager. As an alumni, this is one area where you can stand out from traditional-aged students. You know what you want, you know what skills you bring, and you can communicate your focus and dedication.

Resume Pitfalls

Last Updated on Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:54 Written by Marie Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:02

Improve your job search results by avoiding these common resume pitfalls:

Trying to be all things—Choosing a focus can seem limiting! Review effective marketing campaigns (remember, your resume is a marketing tool), and you will consistently find cohesive, compelling messaging. Even at a career fair, your resume must present a focused picture of your value-add to the organization. Bring multiple versions if necessary.

Generic summary—A summary or professional profile is standard on today’s resumes, acting as a commercial for employers. Most summaries use canned language and focus around skills, not accomplishments. Get in your unique stories professionally by including highlights of value delivered to organizations with a focus on how your skills produce results (results or value added is important in any type of position!).

Client Testimonial:

Thank you for giving your presentation last week! I really appreciate your recommendations for follow up. When you spend all that time researching a company and writing a cover letter, you might as well spend time following up! I decided to call the employers I sent resumes to and got an interview from one of them! The other employer thanked me for following up. I love that you recommended contacting up to three times. In the past, I would just follow up once. Recently I haven't been following up at all so your presentation was a wake up call for me. Thank you so much!
